Is Your Business Visible to AI? Why It Matters Right Now

Ask ChatGPT for the best smoothie shop in your town, the best preschool near you or the best franchise to buy under $300,000. It won't hand you ten blue links. It will name a few businesses, describe them and tell you why.
If your business isn't one of the names, you've lost that customer before they ever saw your website.
That's what AI visibility is about, and it's one of the most important shifts in how customers, and franchise buyers, find businesses today.
The shift is already here
This isn't a someday trend. The numbers from the past year are hard to ignore:
45% of consumers now use AI tools like ChatGPT and Google's AI Mode to get local business recommendations, according to BrightLocal's 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey.
63% of those AI users trust the recommendations they get.
68% of Google searches in the U.S. ended without a click in early 2026, up from about 60% in 2024, according to SparkToro data reported by Search Engine Land.
When Google shows an AI Overview, clicks on the top-ranking result drop by 58%, according to an Ahrefs study of 300,000 keywords.
In other words, ranking on page one of Google is no longer the finish line. More and more often, the AI answer is the only thing a customer reads.
What "AI visible" actually means
Your business is AI visible when someone asks an AI assistant about your category in your market, and your business is:
Named in the answer
Described accurately, with the right hours, location and offering
Linked back to your website or listing
Miss any one of those and the customer either never hears about you or hears the wrong thing.
How AI decides who to recommend
Here's the good news: most of what AI tools rely on is in your control. A Yext analysis of 6.8 million AI citations across ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity found that 86% came from sources brands directly control or strongly influence:
Your own website: 44% of citations
Business listings and directories: 42%
Reviews and social media: 8%
News and forums: 6%
The same study found that AI tools factor in location, which gives businesses with strong local pages an advantage. AI isn't guessing. It's reading what you've published about yourself, and what others have published about you.
Why it matters even more for franchise brands
A single-location business has one audience to win. A franchise brand has three:
Customers looking for a location near them. Every unit needs to show up in its own market.
Franchise candidates researching your opportunity. Buyers now ask AI tools questions like "Is this a good franchise?" and "What does it cost to open one?" Whatever the AI says shapes their first impression of your brand.
Your existing franchisees, who depend on the brand to drive customers to their door.
Consistency is also harder across many locations. One unit with the wrong hours or an unclaimed listing doesn't just hurt that owner. It teaches AI tools inaccurate things about your whole brand.
8 steps to make your business AI visible
Claim and complete your business profiles. Google Business Profile, Bing Places and Apple Business Connect, for every location. Fill in every field, including categories, services, photos and hours.
Make your details identical everywhere. Your name, address, phone number and hours should match exactly across your website, listings and directories.
Build a page for every location. Local pages with the address, hours, services and something specific to that community give AI tools a clear answer for each market.
Answer real questions on your website. Write plain-language answers to the questions customers and franchise candidates actually ask. AI tools favor clear, direct answers.
Add structured data. Schema markup tells search engines and AI tools exactly what your business is, where it is and what it offers. Most website platforms, including Wix, let you add it.
Earn and respond to reviews. A steady flow of recent, detailed reviews, with thoughtful responses, signals a real, active business.
Get mentioned in credible places. Industry directories, local news, podcasts and trade publications all help AI tools trust that you're worth recommending.
Test it yourself, every quarter. Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI Mode the questions your customers ask. Note whether you're named, whether the details are right, and fix what isn't.
For franchisors: make it a system standard
AI visibility shouldn't depend on which franchisees happen to be tech-savvy. Build it into your brand standards: who owns each listing, how location pages are set up, how reviews are handled, and a simple quarterly check for every unit.
And don't forget your franchise development website. When a candidate asks an AI tool about your opportunity, your franchise site, your FAQ and your published content are what it reads first.
The bottom line
Customers and franchise buyers are asking AI where to go and what to buy. The businesses that show up in those answers will win the next decade of growth, and the work to get there is mostly within your control.
At Elevate Franchising, we help brands grow through franchise development and outsourced franchise sales, and how your brand shows up when buyers do their research is part of that conversation.
